John Hellins Primary School – Phase 1

Introduction – John Hellins Primary School (Phase one)

Welcome to the John Hellins website and welcome to John Hellins Primary School. We are a small, very successful village school in Potterspury, South Northamptonshire, where we believe the children are at the heart of everything we do. We have 166 amazing children from the age of four to eleven years old. They spend seven years with us, learning as they laugh, play, concentrate and enjoy everything our school can offer.

Our ethos is simple – we all strive to ‘be the best we can be’ in every aspect of school life. We all have high expectations and achieve our challenging targets because everything we do is motivating, exciting and engaging. Our school is full of energy and enthusiasm, creativity and purpose. We achieve outstanding results by believing in balance – we work hard, but we also play hard.  Alongside lessons which are pitched to stretch all our children, we will also hold our own Strictly John Hellins ballroom dancing competition, we will train to achieve top placing’s in sports events, we will produce amazing art work and we will enjoy making daisy chains on the field.

Our staff are fantastic, our parents are supportive and our community are proud of us. We are all working for the same goal – to be the best we can be!

Brief

The first contact was made with the architect who was working on behalf of John Hellins. The architect was to find a suitable company to provide potentially a double Eco Classroom, but realistically due to budget and funds, a single classroom in the first instance.

Working from a tender produced, Bridge Timber were to quote and design the Eco Classroom based on the specification provided.

The classroom was to include a lobby area along with 2 toilets, one to be disabled accessible, a basic kitchen area was also to be included within the quotation.

With the tender completed and submitted, Bridge Timber were awarded the contract.

With planning permission required, drawings and elevations were submitted along with the planning request.  Bridge Timber offered a full turnkey style project which includes full groundworks, services, planning and building control.

Planning awarded works begun 8 weeks later.

Solution

Once excavations were completed, it was decided a helicoil foundation would be used for this installation.  A screw foundation replaces the standard concrete foundation.

The overall Classroom was to measure 55m2 and would be manufactured using SIP Panels (Structural Insulated Panels), which conform to building regulations, 125mm SIPS were used in the floor and walls, with 175mm SIPS used for the roof structure.  SIPS conform to building regulations.

Externally the classroom was clad with Western Red Cedar.  One obvious advantage of cedar cladding is that it is a natural product and a sustainable product. This means that if you use it you are protecting the environment and reducing the carbon footprint of your building.

Our eco classrooms come complete with Aluminium double doors, with an option of bi-fold.  For this build we supplied a single door in aluminium.  UPVC windows installed in our standard anthracite grey colour to match the powder coated aluminium doors (When supplied).

Standard roofing would be box profile roof sheets, with a UPVC guttering system to the rear.

As standard all classrooms are finished internally with plasterboard skim finish to all walls and ceilings.  Internal decoration can be included at an additional cost.

Flooring options are commercial grade flooring, commercial grade carpet tiles, with option of vinyl to the kitchen and bathroom areas.

Our standard electrical package consist of downlights, quantity is appropriate for the size of the building, power sockets, again this is discussed prior to installation to ensure the school are happy with the quantity.  Heating is discussed prior to installation, and in most cases to conform to building control, SBEM cal’cs along with Air conditioning is required.  Air conditioning is the preferred solution and was installed at St Ambrose.

A stunning Classroom manufactured at John Hellins Primary, we wish the school and children many of happy years in their new facility.
